Taiwan often gets mistaken as just being an island part of China. But Taiwan is it’s own independent entity that has loads of intriguing sights to see, all located on the 36,000 sq km island. Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 7. Maokong Gondola It’s not the gondola you first think of where you’re leisurely lounging on a boat as a man in a striped shirt sings operatically as you pass under a bridge. This kind of gondola has you hovering above a tree covered mountain near the Taipei Zoo. The gondola line runs about 4.3 km or 2.7 miles. For someone afraid of heights, that seems a bit long, and in fact the ride lasts about 25 minutes--which is great for anyone who enjoys taking in the view at great heights. Maokong is actually known for the beautiful tea plantations and tea shops....

  • Taipei, Taiwan - 8+3 Awesome Things To See/Do

Taipei, Taiwan is a vibrant city that is rich in culture, history, street food, and religion. It’s safe, super-friendly, convenient and probably undervalued compared to the super Asian city destinations of Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore, Seoul. Ironically many residents of those cities choose Taipei as a destination, enjoying some of those qualities that their city once had or simply lacks. Why the title 8+3 Awesome Sights To See/Do? Well most in Asia would be clued in to the significance of the number 8 and 3. In Chinese,(Mandarin), the word eight sounds similar to the word for prosper or wealth. It’s also similar sounding in Cantonese. The number 8 is an auspicious number. The number three sounds similar to the character for birth and is also considered a lucky number. There are three stag...

http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com Driving from south Taiwan to Taitung on the East Coast involved crossing through mountain ranges on some wonderful highways and past different aboriginal villages. Many of the tribes decorate entrance to their villages which always meant a stop to photograph the decorations. It was not the nicest of days thanks to a cold front over Japan but we made the most of it. There were fishing villages, black sand beaches and even the local 7-11 Stores along the road are a marvel; immaculately clean, spotless toilets, a variety of hot and cold foods, pleasant and helpful staff. I have always loved travelling. I was lucky enough that from a young age, my parents took us all over the place, instilling in us a sense of larger spaces and broadened horizons. As I grew up, I became more independent in my travels and tried to figure out ways to do it more. From learning Spanish in Salamanca to purposefully getting 6 month summer jobs in places I wanted to explore further. I became accustomed to getting lost and just wondering the streets, figuring out where would be the next good meal or when I would stumble onto some secret only locals whispered about. Getting lost was second nature back then. The only resources we had were over-read guide books that by the time you reached their recommendations, the waiters would push their best sellers down your throats. So we had to resort to friend recommendations, what blog resources were up on the internet, guide books, conversations with strangers and your hotel concierge. Nowadays in our hyper connected world, everyone is an expert and there are so many sites that claim that this restaurants, trumps this bar, which is passé and now is considered touristy by pretty much everyone. Honestly, for me, good is good, so that’s what I base myself on. For every family or friend trip we would take, I became the defacto research guide. Skimming through websites in English and in the language of destination, guide books, personal blogs, Instagram hashtags, geotags and anything else social media would allow me to delve into. Finally, being able to create a snap shot of the city, its districts and where to eat, sleep, drink, party or learn about the culture. This is what Overnight is about. https://www.expedia.com/Taipei.d180030.Destination-Travel-Guides Taipei is the glittering capital of Taiwan, and one of the hottest travel destinations in all of Asia. When you visit this thriving city, you’ll find collections of stunning futuristic buildings interspersed with ancient Chinese temples and traditions. One of these temples, Longshan, is located in Wanhua, the city’s oldest neighborhood. This is where you come to find good fortune, good health, and spiritual advice of all sorts. Once you’ve attained the guidance and wisdom you may not have realized you sought, head to 228 Peace Park, where you will find the memorial to the 1949 uprisings that eventually led to Taiwan’s independence. Don’t worry about getting around the city; the Taipei Rapid Transit System, or MRT, will take you just about anywhere you need to go. Hop on it to pay a visit to the National Palace Museum, where you’ll find a giant collection of Chinese art and artifacts. There’s over half a million pieces related to ancient Chinese royalty here, and you can spend days exploring them all. To plan out your next move, make your way to Taipei 101. This is one of the world’s tallest buildings, and you can soar to the top for a breathtaking view of the city and pick out the next place you’ll visit. Do you see Elephant Mountain? It’s not far from the downtown area, and it’s a short climb to the top for another look at Taipei. Keep up with the nature theme and make your stop the Taipei Zoo, where you’ll meet the largest menagerie of animals in Asia. Cap off a day of Taipei sightseeing and adventure at Shilin Night Market, where you can join the locals in finding that next great meal or landing a spectacular bargain. What will you do in Taipei? Maokong is actually known for the beautiful tea plantations and tea shops. There’s also such a thing as a “crystal cabin” which consist of a glass floor that’s 48mm thick, called “the Eyes of Maokong Gondola.” As if you weren’t afraid of heights enough. 6. High Heel Church That crystal blue pump you see before you is known as the High Heel Wedding Church, as emphasized by the big red letters that spell LOVE on the outside. The church is located in the Budai Township and has a bit of an interesting reason for why it was made. It’s not exactly as romantic or as stylish as you would think it is, though it’s actually made to mean something. Commemorating the blackfoot disease of the 1950s as the reason the tall, blue shoe was built in the first place. It stands at 17.76 m in height and is made up of 300 individual pieces of blue glass. It officially opened in for everyone in the summer of 2916, so it’s a fairly new monument, but no less interesting. 5. Houtong Cat Village Animals lovers can revel in the huge presence of felines at the Houtong Cat Village located in New Taipei. Here, the cat population is quite high. And instead of considering it part of a pest problem, the area seems to embrace it, as you can see with this cat comfortably lounging by this railing which is situated along a line of little cat houses. But cats weren’t always the dominating animals around these parts before. In fact, the village used to be called Kautong, or monkey cave, for the monkeys that once dwelled here centuries ago. Houtong was once a coal mining village where now hundreds of cats now call their home. (Or at least, we presume they call it their home. We’re not really sure what they would call it). It all started in 2008 when a local cat person and a few volunteers wanted to improve the wellbeing of cats in the area. 4. Agora Garden This tall and twisting building is being called Agora Garden. You’re looking at a digital image of the building as right now it’s in the middle of being constructed, so it’s sure to be part of the Taipei skyline soon. Recent photos show the skeleton of the building being constructed, it’s twirling nature already taking shape. Agora Garden was developed for the purpose of making the city a bit more green and clean. It’s supposed to absorb about 130 tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. It’s twist is at about 90 degrees and will be completed with 22 floors of trees and gardens which are being called “vertical farms.” 3. Rainbow Village One of the most saturated and vibrant instances of street art takes shape in what is known as The Rainbow Village which was started all the way back in 1924. These colorful walls, roofs, and sidewalks were started by a former soldier who began this creative sight when he was painting the houses in the settlement. Over time, the houses fell into disrepair, but the local university students wanted to preserve the soldier’s work, whose name was Huang Yung-Fu. Nowadays, Rainbow Village is a beloved tourist attraction. 2. Teng Feng Fish Ball Museum Seafood lovers, doesn’t that sound like a place you’d have a good time? The Teng Feng museum is exactly what it says it is in the facility’s name. The museum documents and displays the history of fishballs, if you ever wanted to know. And it turns out, it’s a highly frequented facility so it seems people do, in fact, want to know. The Teng Feng Fish Ball company dates its establishment back to the 1940s and after finding success in the food market, the museum was soon developed as a way to give back to the community and was opened in 2004. There’s 2 exhibition halls at the museum as well as fish ball equipment on display. 1...

http://www.mydestination.com/taipei/things-to-do/1168163/taipei-arena-h-sep No matter what kind of sport you like, there's a way to play for everyone at the Taipei Arena. The outer wall of the arena is a glass boundary, offering a vision into the city beyond. This transparency seems to visually integrate the arena into the city its situated in and vice-versa, offering visitors to the arena a somehow magnified experience. The venue itself is open twenty-four hours a day, except for the ice rink which is only open from 9AM until 9PM. The Taipei Arena is comprised of a myriad of smaller venues, among these a showroom, conference rooms, restaurants, a VIP lounge, stores and snack vendors. For public use, the Taipei Arena also houses squash courts, a gym and two dance studios. All of which are available to be rented out by the public. The Maokong Gondola (perhaps better known as a cable car) is a Taipei "must do". This beautiful journey will take you from the Taipei Zoo station to the enchanted village of Maokong, with several scenic stops along the way. Once you have purchased your ticket, you are free to get off and on at each of the stops. The fares for each passenger's journey are based on the number of stations traveled and concessional fares are available to the disabled and seniors aged over 65 years of age. Fares can be paid by purchasing tickets at the Maokong Gondola station, or by swiping the Taipei Metro EasyCard. With each adult ticket purchased, two children are able to travel free and discounts are available for those travelling in groups. Take note that is may be cheapest to purchase the one-day Taipei pass, which allows you unlimited bus and MRT rides, as well as three gondola rides per card - at just $250NTD. In 2010, thirty of the Maokong Gondola cabins were retrofitted with 48mm thick glass bottoms, to become the premium "crystal cabins". Also lovingly labelled the "Eyes of Maokong Gondola", these cabins have a separate queue and ticket price. The cabins can hold up to five guests, and allow those inside to peer through the glass bottom cars onto the jungle beneath. Find out more: http://myde.st/22z9

Locals stream onto the lower parking-lot deck on scooters (you go to the upper deck, via a separate entrance). The ride across the narrow, ship-packed Kaohsiung Harbor is so quick that many don’t bother to get off their machines. Qijin Island is a 9km-long silt-created giant sandbar that serves as a breakwater and defines the harbor’s form. Its tourist area is on the north end, beyond the ferry pier." "Qihou Lighthouse, a snow-white 11-meter-high Baroque-style tower erected by the Japanese in 1916, stands at the edge of a sea-facing cliff guarding the harbor’s exceedingly narrow north-end mouth. Enthralling views of the busy harbor can be enjoyed as ships squeeze by below. The old Qihou Battery, on the west side of the hill, was built by a justifiably anxious Qing Dynasty government in the 1870s, fearful of invasion by the Japanese or Western powers." "The young, expansive, and still-growing Pier-2 Art Center (pier-2.khcc.gov.tw), a special zone that is at the heart of the city’s cultural-creative bloom, has become one of its most popular attractions. The numerous old, renovated Kaohsiung Harbor warehouses here, long abandoned, were formerly used to store such goods as fish meal and granulated sugar. Today they are cultural-creative incubator stages for domestic and international exhibitions, festivals, live indoor and outdoor musical, theatrical, and busker performances, and large-scale outdoor installation artworks and graffiti-style/3D murals, many wonderfully quirky and whimsical, some created by artists-in-residence." "The king of Kaohsiung has long been, and remains, the lofty 85 Sky Tower, which looks like a giant spacecraft propped atop two massive booster rockets, ready to launch. Two spanking-new structures, Kaohsiung Exhibition Center (www.kecc.com.tw) and Kaohsiung Main Public Library (www.ksml.edu.tw), are within easy walking distance. The park-surrounded harborside exhibition facility looks like a paean to Beijing’s iconic Bird’s Nest. Be sure to visit the green library’s lovely 8F rooftop hanging garden, which has a fine broad view of the harbor and Qijin." "What’s not to love about the Love River? On my first few visits, in the 1990s, it was a brackish “waterway” in which the water moved little, if at all. Today, thanks to dedicated eco-engineering, it is clean, the waters flow freely, and fish have returned. The landscaped banks are lined with benches, bike- and pedestrian-friendly paths, and attractive lamp lighting. The mood is best at night, when the cafés, bars, and small eateries are brightly lit up." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-NtRHswD-E

There are three stages to a person’s life-birth, marriage, and death. So my wish is for prosperity and good luck for all those that visit Taipei, Taiwan and for the people of the city that have treated me with such great kindness and hospitality for the past 4 years. Would love to get your feedback on the video and ideas for future content. Also what other countries do you like to visit in Asia? Thanks again with many blessings to you!
